Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev has implemented a return-to-office (RTO) policy that differs based on employee rank. Executives are required to attend the office five days a week, managers four days, and individual contributors three days. Tenev believes that leading by example motivates employees. He regrets the company's earlier remote-first decision and highlights the challenges of reversing it. Tenev emphasizes the importance of in-person experiences for company culture, noting that witnessing leaders’ greater efforts can inspire employees.
You have to be willing to do yourself, to an even higher degree, what you ask of everyone else. This lead-by-example approach has been helpful for motivating employees.
If you're a senior leader, an executive, you're five days; if you're a manager, four days; if you're an IC, three days. It's good because if you're an individual contributor and you're doing work, it's very nice to know that your manager is going through more pain than you.
Coming out strongly for being remote-first made it much, much harder to reverse the decision. I learned that you can reverse your decisions if they are the wrong calls.
We emphasize the in-person experience. We found that makes a big difference in the company's culture.
