Cameo, a startup based in Chicago, has introduced a return-to-office policy requiring employees to work onsite Monday through Thursday. In a push to make this shift attractive, the company offers a $10,000 annual raise, along with benefits such as free parking, catered lunches, and gym access. CEO Steven Galanis stated that the aim was to make the office experience rewarding, compensating employees for sacrificing their remote work flexibility. This policy applies only to the local workforce, while other remote employees do not receive a pay raise.
We really felt like we wanted to make HQ a perk, not a punishment. We know we're asking more out of you to give up the flexibility, and we wanted to compensate you for it.
Galanis chose to set the annual raise at $10,000 because the figure would make a 'meaningful' difference in employees' lives and hoped it would help junior employees find housing nearby instead of taking on long commutes.
