When my boyfriend and I blended our families and traditions, we realized we needed to form new traditions, too
Briefly

Blending two families brought the challenge of merging both visible and invisible aspects, including furniture and traditions. Traditions such as pizza Fridays and sushi nights merged easily, while others that involve extended family and grief presented challenges. Navigating these traditions included understanding the complexities of loss and finding ways to incorporate elements from both families. The realization emerged that not all traditions could be perfectly blended, but new ones could foster family unity. This journey highlights the importance of resilience and adaptation in creating a harmonious family dynamic.
We both knew there was something special between us. We spoke the language of grief, of solo parents, of young widows who'd lost their forever person to cancer.
The goal of building a family of six out of our respective families of three involved blending visible things like furniture and invisible things like values and traditions.
Some traditions were easy to blend like alternating pizza and sushi Fridays, while others involving grief were more complicated and cannot always be blended seamlessly.
We had to accept that there won't be a perfect blend, there won't be a seamless way to shape two traditions into one.
