Reading Others: What Dogs Can Teach Us
Briefly

Reading people and groups is critical for leaders. The ability to read small cues from others may seem effortless to dogs but can be challenging for many people. Dogs can teach us how to make life a little better.
Matisse, my therapy dog, exhibits an extraordinary skill: she knows when approach is appropriate and when it isn’t. Unlike us, she senses energy deeply, showcasing the need for leaders to adjust to whom they interact with, demonstrating that such skills can be learned.
In my experience as an executive coach, I’ve witnessed firsthand the importance of adjusting communication styles to fit the individual or group, a multifaceted skill that can be daunting for leaders. Bearing witness to Matisse's nuanced interactions has offered valuable insights.
Many skills of effective leadership, like deep listening and adaptability in group settings, are vital for success. Watching how my therapy dog navigates social interactions has underscored this necessity, teaching me that tuning into other people's cues is essential.
