LinkedIn is retiring its Community Top Voice badges, which were gold badges awarded to users for contributions to Collaborative Articles. Current holders will see their badges expire within 60 days, with all badges phased out by December 7, 2024.
While the intention behind the Community Top Voice badges was to drive engagement, the automatic nature of their distribution diminished their value, making them more akin to participation trophies than recognition of genuine contribution.
The elimination of these badges raises questions about future engagement with LinkedIn's Collaborative Articles, as they had previously incentivized some users to interact with AI-generated prompts, leading to speculation about the underlying motivations for creation.
With LinkedIn having opted all users into data usage for training purposes, there is concern that the introduction of Collaborative Articles was part of a data-driven strategy, potentially dissuading user participation.
