A bipartisan group of lawmakers has proposed a bill to prevent political campaigns from using AI to misrepresent opponents, addressing threats posed by misinformation.
"Right now, the FEC does not have the teeth, the regulatory authority, to protect the election," said Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, emphasizing the need for stronger regulation.
Rep. Adam Schiff called the bill a "modest first step" in combating the risks of deepfakes, highlighting its simplicity as an asset to address serious issues.
Experts warn that without regulation, AI-generated content, especially deepfakes, could overwhelm voters, leading them to question the authenticity of political messages.
