Why I have a bedtime - but let my kids stay up as long as they want
Briefly

The article discusses the evolution of bedtime routines in a family as children grow older. Initially, strict routines were necessary with young kids to ensure early bedtimes for the mother's peace. However, now that the children are teenagers, they have the freedom to choose their bedtime, learning through trial and error the importance of sleep. The author allows some flexibility on weekends but maintains boundaries, emphasizing the importance of communication about their choices.
Our entire lives revolved around their bedtime routine for years. Fast forward to today, and things look very different. I'm the one with the bedtime routine.
But that's the point - I figure they have to learn for themselves how much sleep they need, and they do this through trial and error.
I've given my kids the freedom to manage their own sleep routine. I still check in on them, suggest it’s time to turn off their devices.
Weekends have flexibility - they can talk about staying up later without sneaking around. If it's Friday, staying up is completely their choice.
