Postpartum depression, affecting 17% of individuals giving birth globally, can now be predicted by a newly developed machine-learning tool. This advancement could drastically improve preventive care for new parents, as those identified at high risk were three times more likely to develop the condition. Researchers validated the model using data from over 29,000 individuals, incorporating health records and postpartum screening scores while excluding those with prior depression. Despite its limitations, the tool's predictions could facilitate effective intervention strategies for mental health support in postpartum care.
An unmet need for preventive care in postpartum depression can be potentially addressed with a new machine-learning tool predicting high-risk individuals.
