Calypso's launch marked only the sixth time NASA astronauts debuted a new spacecraft, joining the ranks of Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Space Shuttle, SpaceX Crew Dragon, and now Boeing Starliner.
Calypso will introduce a backup plan for the U.S. to launch astronauts into low-Earth orbit, similar to the SpaceX Crew Dragon program.
At 10:52 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday, Starliner finally lifted off the launch pad at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, heading to the ISS for an eight-day stay.
Calypso, launched atop a ULA Atlas V rocket, marked the first time in 61 years that an Atlas-class rocket sent humans to space, solidifying a historic event.
