According to a report from Collective Fashion Justice, only 3.4% of BFC members have set public targets for emissions reduction aligned with the Paris Agreement, highlighting a significant lack of accountability in the fashion industry. Despite the industry's importance, few leading brands are actively committing to sustainable practices, with only five brands currently having science-based targets in place. This contrast illustrates an ongoing challenge for the sector's transition to more environmentally responsible practices.
Orsola de Castro, a co-founder of Fashion Revolution, pointed out, 'I think it's the great big elephant in the room. Brands can hide behind their own misdeeds in many ways. We have seen fast fashion and ultra-fast fashion as the problem, and we are only now seeing the phenomenal impact the luxury sector has on the supply chain.' This statement speaks to the industry's broader struggles and the lack of transparency in sustainable practices.
