A new solar-clad research hub will be built on Governors Island, NYC, designed by SOM and set for completion in 2028. This Center for Climate Solutions will serve as a year-round campus, housing education programs and supporting climate-focused startups. It will accommodate thousands, including students and workforce trainees, promoting public service. The design emphasizes sustainability with a mass timber structure, reflecting ambitious environmental goals while integrating into the urban fabric of the historic location, positioning NYC as a leader in climate initiatives.
The Center for Climate Solutions on Governors Island will stand as a monumental statement about where the city's priorities lie in a warming world.
Originally born out of a 2020 rezoning proposal, the project has evolved into a consortium-driven initiative, anchored by Stony Brook University.
