Slate Auto, a new American electric vehicle startup, challenges the norm set by Tesla with its focus on affordability and simplicity. Revealed in Long Beach, California, the company promises a two-seater pickup that can be transformed into a five-seater SUV, all for under $20,000 thanks to federal tax credits. With manual windows and no infotainment screen, Slate emphasizes a customizable and 'analog' driving experience. Backed by Jeff Bezos, the startup seeks to offer accessible EV options while addressing rising vehicle costs in an increasingly technology-driven market.
"The auto industry has been so focused on autonomy and technology in the vehicle, it's driven prices to a place that most Americans simply can't afford," said chief commercial officer Jeremy Snyder.
"We are building the affordable vehicle that has long been promised but never been delivered," CEO Chris Barman added.
Slate's base version will squeeze 150 miles from a 52.7kWh battery pack, with a larger option offering around 240 miles of range.
The startup's trucks will be available for under $20,000 after federal EV tax credits, aiming to redefine affordability in the EV market.
