Teen's accused killer ruled unfit: Judge sends Bronx stab suspect to psych ward - Bronx Times
Briefly

A Bronx Supreme Court judge has ruled that Waldo Mejia, accused of fatally stabbing 14-year-old Caleb Rijos, is mentally unfit for trial. Mejia, 29, faces serious charges including murder and manslaughter. The brutal and unprovoked attack occurred as Rijos walked to school. He succumbed to his injuries, calling his father moments before his death. The District Attorney expressed outrage and highlighted Rijos's promising future. Mejia, who has a history of mental illness and a criminal record, will remain in psychiatric custody until capable of standing trial.
"He called his father and told his father that he couldn't breathe and that he was scared, and his father heard him dying," District Attorney Darcel D. Clark recalled.
"This murder is unfathomable—to think about the level of this tragedy. Caleb was a good student. He was a football player at the Bronx Leadership Academy," Clark stated.
