Smash burgers are cheap to make and satisfying to eat, as close to a guaranteed win as you can get on a menu. With diners ever stingier with their money, and restaurant margins ever thinner, that's increasingly the only thing there's room for.
Over the past five years or so, smash burgers have grown in national popularity. But 2024 was the year they officially peaked - and maybe jumped the shark.
In New York, there are chains like 7th Street Burger and Smashed, competing with Greenpoint's Jubilee Market, Gotham Burger Social Club, and K.O. Burger.
The present-day smash burger would never resemble the gargantuan smash burger from Nowon that began trending in 2019, which highlights the evolution of this food phenomenon.
