Ann Francke, the chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute, emphasized that ‘Fertility treatment is often a very private and unpredictable experience for employees, presenting numerous challenges such as balancing work pressures with last-minute hospital appointments.’ She highlights that without skilled management support, employees might endure increased stress and sick leave as they navigate their treatment.
Francke noted, ‘Employers risk losing good people because they are not addressing what is a growing issue affecting more and more of our workforce every year.’ This underscores the importance of implementing supportive policies to retain talent.
A CMI survey revealed that just 19% of managers reported having a formal policy on fertility treatment, while 63% acknowledged a need for such policies, indicating a significant gap in organizational support for fertility issues.
Sharon Martin, interim chief executive of Fertility Network UK, stated that ‘fertility policies were vital for effective support to combat the lack of education around the reality of fertility struggles’ emphasizing the necessity for workplace awareness and structured support.
