Caltrain's electric fleet, launched in September, has significantly boosted ridership by 39% year-over-year, surprising transit officials. The agency's promises of faster, quieter service and reduced emissions have attracted more weekend leisure travelers post-COVID, despite a decline in weekday commuters. Testimonials indicate heightened enthusiasm among riders, with officials optimistic about ongoing recovery. Although December 2024 ridership reached 588,328, it remains below pre-COVID levels, emphasizing the need for sustained service improvements to maintain momentum and encourage future transit investments.
What we've heard from the public anecdotally is just a lot of enthusiasm over the electrification, people virtually giddy over it.
We think they’ve been able to accomplish a lot of what they promised and that's really important. If you want people to invest in transit in the future, you have to deliver on what you're promising.
