The closer the political alignment of the content to the user - both liberal and conservative - the more it was shared without clicks, said researcher S. Shyam Sundar. They are simply forwarding information that aligns with their ideology, often without realizing it may be false.
Sundar’s study, published in Nature Human Behaviour, highlights a concerning level of media literacy, especially relevant as it reflects potential trends towards misinformation during Trump’s administration.
Approximately 75% of Facebook users shared links without prior evaluation. This behavior was notably more pronounced among conservatives, who accounted for about 77% of such shares.
The study indicates that disinformation campaigns may exploit this lack of verification, as individuals are more inclined to disseminate information that resonates with their pre-existing beliefs.
