NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is laying off 325 more workers
Briefly

JPL Director Laurie Leshin stated that the lab had already implemented significant employee cuts earlier this year, but due to ongoing budget constraints, it must proceed with one further workforce reduction impacting 325 employees.
Explaining the situation, Leshin mentioned, "we had to tighten our belts across the board, and you will see that reflected in the layoff impacts,” emphasizing that the layoffs are a consequence of the lab's need to align with funding realities.
The budget for the Mars Sample Return Program saw a drastic cut, with NASA's request of $950 million receiving only $300 million, severely impacting the project and leading to significant operational changes at JPL.
With NASA's budgetary constraints and a reallocation of resources, the lab has also frozen hiring while considering proposals from private entities to rethink its mission trajectory, which could dramatically change future plans.
