The main burst around 7:30 p.m. on Webster Avenue between E. 201st Street and East Mosholu Parkway South in Bedford Park, according to the FDNY. Emergency crews rushed to the scene and attempted to open drains - but the water was spewing faster than the drains in the area could swallow it, ABC7 reported.
Neighborhood resident Joseph Parrom told the outlet his daughter was able to move her car to higher ground as water in the street began to rise rapidly. "She had a neighbor move her car up the corner. They were lucky right there by the barbershop, and they were lucky to move," he said.
Locals and first responders could be seen wading through water nearly up to their waist. The water didn't enter any buildings, ABC 7 reported.
Crews are investigating the cause of the break, as concerns grow over the impact on fresh water supply and the potential for further disruptions.
