In designing the renovation of the 150-year-old folk house, we valued the passage of time and aimed to create a space that could be inherited by future generations. Our approach was not to completely dismantle and rebuild but to enhance the existing structure through traditional techniques and materials, ensuring the house's historical essence remains intact.
The integration of sericulture into the design is a tribute to local history and heritage, with an imaginative reuse of traditional baskets for railings and wall materials, reinforcing the house's connection to the region's agricultural past.
The layout of the house reflects modern living needs, with a flexible division between living areas and an expansive earthen floor section, allowing for diverse uses, accommodating changes in family structure and lifestyle while maintaining the cozy atmosphere typical of traditional Japanese homes.
Natural materials were prioritized for new elements, chosen for their ability to harmonize with the old, preserving the aesthetic continuity of the folk house while providing functional updates to meet contemporary living expectations.
