Entering the tech industry as a coder, particularly from a marginalized background, can present significant challenges. Many newcomers are overconfident after training, mistakenly believing they will quickly excel. However, the reality is that the tech environment is vast and often unwelcoming, reflecting longstanding issues of diversity and equity. To succeed, new coders are advised to adopt an attitude of humility, focusing on listening, learning, and supporting others in the industry, while navigating the complex culture of tech development.
Many new developers come out of code camp convinced they are about to be rock stars, but the truth is that tech is too vast for one person to know everything.
The industry has not improved much in terms of diversity over the years, making it clear that if it's welcoming, it is not equitable.
