House in Akiyoshidai / OHArchitecture
Briefly

The renovation of an apartment in Otsu City emphasizes creating communal spaces instead of independent rooms. With expansive openings towards Chausuyama Park, it fosters a connection with nature. This design approach eliminates unnecessary partitions, promoting a shared lifestyle among family members. By integrating various生活 (lifestyle) functions, the architects encourage interactions that enrich daily experiences, reflecting a shift from isolated living spaces to a more communal family dynamic. The concept transforms the dwelling unit, prioritizing function and connectivity over traditional room divisions.
To maximize the appeal of the units that can feel the external environment, we decided not to divide the units into multiple rooms as much as possible.
Rather than calling it a 'dwelling unit,' it might be more appropriate to call it a 'group of rooms.'
By abandoning the concept of a room and eliminating unnecessary partitions and fittings, we created not a small room, a desk for one person, a single bed, and a closet for one person.
Eating, sleeping, playing, studying, working, cooking, laundry, and other activities will interfere with each other within the dwelling unit.
