Darnell Jackson, 39, was arrested for second-degree murder in the first NYC homicide of 2025, following the fatal slashing of Alfredo Cortes, 72, on New Year's Day.
The incident occurred near the corner of West 137th Street and Lenox Avenue at about 4:21 a.m., with police finding Cortes suffering from a slash wound to his neck.
Jackson was apprehended shortly after the incident and charged after questioning. The motive for the stabbing is still under investigation.
Despite a reported decrease in overall homicides in 2024, this incident marks a concerning start to 2025 in Manhattan.
