The European Commission has issued a hefty fine of nearly 800 million euros against Meta for abusing its dominant position in the online classified ads market.
The commission accused Meta of distorting competition by tying its Marketplace to its social network, forcing Facebook users into using Marketplace whether they desire it or not.
Margrethe Vestager stated, 'Meta's practices gave it advantages that other online classified ads service providers could not match. This is illegal under EU antitrust rules.'
Meta contended that the decision does not prove competitive harm and insists users can choose whether to engage with Marketplace, which many do not.
