According to a study by Bain, growing energy use from datacenters could outstrip supply within just a couple of years, requiring utilities to increase generation capacity by 26% by 2028.
The expansion of datacenters, driven by the demand for AI infrastructure, is projected to more than double power consumption from these facilities by 2030, emphasizing a significant challenge for energy providers.
Not just the US, but European datacenter operators are also struggling with power supply, as evidenced by Ireland consuming over a fifth of its electricity for datacenters in 2023.
Bain highlighted that despite the pressing demand for increased energy capacity due to datacenter growth and other factors like electric vehicles, utilities have prioritized efficiency over expansion.
