CNN is set to reintroduce a streaming service, according to CEO Mark Thompson's internal memo, aimed at delivering news programming to viewers on their preferred devices. This move follows the scrapping of CNN Plus, a prior streaming effort that lasted just a month. While specific content plans are yet to be revealed, Thompson indicated significant global demand for streaming news. Additionally, CNN is pivoting towards digital video and reducing its workforce by six percent amidst these changes, leveraging a $70 million investment from its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.
It's early days but we've already established that there's immense demand for it not just in America but across much of the world.
Thompson's memo also said Alex MacCallum, CNN's executive vice president for digital products and services, will announce the company's 'first lifestyle-oriented digital product'.
The news of a revived CNN streaming service comes as linear TV networks grapple with a growing shift toward streaming.
Thompson says the company 'doesn't expect total headcount to fall much this year' because of a $70 million investment from CNN parent company Warner Bros. Discovery.
