Charles Phan, the pioneer behind Slanted Door, has died at age 62, leaving behind a legacy of modern Vietnamese cuisine in San Francisco. He suffered a cardiac arrest and was hospitalized before succumbing to a serious brain injury. His restaurant group announced plans to continue his vision, with locations expanding beyond California, including France. Phan, an immigrant who learned to cook for his family at a young age, was considered a trailblazer in fine dining, opening The Slanted Door in the Mission District in 1995 and enriching the American culinary landscape.
Charles was a trailblazer, a dreamer who refused to settle for the status quo, significantly changing the landscape of Vietnamese cuisine in America.
While this was sudden and shocking to many of us, we will endure as the Slanted Door has for almost 30 years, continuing Phan's legacy.
