Bookshop.org is launching e-books to help local bookstores compete with Amazon's Kindle
Briefly

Andy Hunter founded Bookshop.org to counteract the dominance of Amazon in the book industry, especially as it surpassed 50% of U.S. book sales in 2018. His goal was to provide a platform for independent bookstores to thrive in the digital age, allowing them to retain most of their sales revenue. Launched in January 2020, Bookshop.org found success quickly, selling $50,000 in books in its first month. The site now supports local stores while expanding its offerings, including an e-book initiative, amid changing shopping habits, particularly during the pandemic.
I felt very strongly that books are too important to our culture to give complete control of them to a single monopolist-like retailer.
Within the first month, the site sold $50,000 of books. I considered that a success, but we didn't know if it was going to work.
