A minke whale that had been swimming in Long Beach's Rainbow Harbor for a week was discovered dead on April 6. NOAA officials are investigating its body, looking for injuries or illnesses. They plan to take blood and tissue samples to determine the cause of death and potentially help other whales in future incidents. Spokesperson Michael Milstein noted that while it is not unusual for whales to get trapped in basins, this whale had shown no prior signs of illness during its time in the harbor.
