As we reflect on five years since the Covid-19 lockdowns, a notable trend is the return of in-person work over remote arrangements. Major employers are modeling a shift that emphasizes physical presence and collaboration. Employees, however, express dissatisfaction, valuing hybrid work equivalently to an 8% raise and fearing job loss if remote options are eliminated. Additionally, studies show that remote work often leads to increased sedentary behavior, and the incidental exercise gained from commuting is lost, contributing to a decline in physical activity for those working from home.
While the extra time and flexibility afforded by remote or hybrid work have allowed some people to get a little extra sleep or make it to the gym, the decline in background physical exertion can offset those benefits.
46% of remote or hybrid employees say they would be "somewhat or very unlikely to stay at their current job" if their employer no longer allowed them to work from home.
