How AI Companions Affect Attachment and Sexual Connection
National Mental Health Awareness Month in the U.S. uses the theme “More Good Days, Together,” emphasizing connection, support, and community for emotional well-being. Many therapy clients report increasing loneliness despite being digitally connected. The American Psychological Association’s 2025 Stress in America survey found more than 6 in 10 U.S. adults felt isolated over the past year. Reported loneliness symptoms include low desire and less frequent sexual intimacy, missing being hugged or touched, anger during couples therapy about a boring sex life, and erectile issues with fear of initiating sex. A 2024 study by Chou and colleagues tested an AI chatbot with 35 adults averaging age 65 who had anxiety or depression during COVID-19 lockdowns, tracking outcomes after four weeks using multiple self-report questionnaires.
