High-functioning anxiety is characterized by individuals who successfully manage daily responsibilities despite experiencing anxiety symptoms internally. Unlike a clinical diagnosis, it manifests as overwhelming perfectionism, stress, and worry about meeting expectations at work. Experts emphasize that those affected often struggle with excessive self-imposed pressure while appearing composed externally. The phenomenon often arises from various factors such as job insecurity and toxic work relationships, indicating deeper mental health concerns. Recognizing signs of high-functioning anxiety is essential in addressing one's mental health in the workplace and finding appropriate coping strategies.
"It's not a diagnosis, but rather someone who has anxiety but still goes about their day-to-day lives managing it," said licensed clinical psychologist Scott Lyons.
"People with high-functioning anxiety often are successful at work but will mask this anxiety to others," Lyons explained.
"Perfectionism is a huge sign of high-functioning anxiety as you work to be the best at everything, which is an impossible task," explained Erin L. Moran.
