The irony of insomnia is that it's the effort to sleep that is the bulk of the problem, and that normal sleepers don't actually "try to sleep." The only people out there on planet Earth trying to sleep are our beloved patients suffering from insomnia.
Typically, when patients first have symptoms, they have a few tough nights, experience the negative consequences the next day, and say to themselves, "I must not let insomnia happen again," and the pressure party begins.
I've noticed that many Type A, high achievers suffer from insomnia. They present as extremely frustrated and distressed by the problem because they are not used to failing.
Thankfully, there is a treatment that works! Cognitive behavioral treatment is effective in addressing the underlying issues of insomnia and helping patients reclaim their sleep.
