"The cost of health care and the need for health care are both so substantial for older adults in the U.S.," says the study's lead author Dr. John Z. Ayanian. He highlights how concerns about health care are paramount for older adults, reflecting on their challenging financial situations due to rising costs. This demographic wishes to see politicians taking serious action to address these escalating concerns, which represent a significant burden on their limited fixed incomes.
"We've had some great advances in helping people manage chronic conditions and reduce their risk of cancer and other major health problems," Ayanian says. However, he emphasizes that these medical advances have not been matched by a decrease in the costs of obtaining these services, which have significantly outpaced inflation. For older adults, this trend leads to heightened apprehension regarding their future health care costs and choices.
