Manchester United is set to construct an ambitious new stadium designed by Foster + Partners, featuring a distinctive umbrella-like covering that enhances energy efficiency. The stadium aims to accommodate 100,000 spectators, significantly increasing capacity from the current 74,000 and reflecting the club's desire to host larger events. Located next to the historic 115-year-old stadium, which may serve as a museum, the project includes a vibrant public plaza and improved transport links, alongside plans for up to 17,000 new homes to boost local redevelopment.
"Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world's greatest football stadium, at the center of a regenerated Old Trafford," said Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United.
The substantial umbrella-like structure will not only provide a distinctive aesthetic but will also harness solar energy and collect rainwater, promoting sustainability.
