In September 2024, Foster + Partners announced their collaboration with Manchester United for a transformative master plan centered on a new stadium, poised to be the UK's largest football venue with a capacity of 100,000 seats. The design features an innovative roof that enhances the spectating experience and incorporates sustainable elements, such as rainwater and solar energy harvesting. The project will utilize prefabrication techniques to expedite construction to five years, reflecting the city’s industrial roots. Additionally, the plan includes a revitalized urban area and improved transport links to the stadium.
According to Norman Foster, the new Manchester United Stadium is "not a fortress surrounded by a sea of cars" but an open space "contained by an umbrella that harvests solar energy and rainwater."
The stadium will be built from approximately 160 prefabricated, Meccano-like components, transported via Manchester's Ship Canal, a nod to the city's industrial heritage.
