L.A. is rolling out 3,000 bus shelters to help protect riders from extreme heat
Briefly

Los Angeles faces escalating heat with extreme heat days tripling and summer temperatures rising significantly. In response, StreetsLA is installing 3,000 bus shelters in high-ridership areas, particularly benefiting communities with limited green spaces. This initiative aims to offer much-needed relief from the sun to transit riders, approximately 63,800 of whom now enjoy this shelter every weekday. Designed by SOM LA studio, the shelters feature California modernism architecture emphasizing simplicity and functionality to meet the needs of transit users.
It became a very human-centric effort of understanding who the transit riders are and understanding their needs.
The shelters are simple and functional, with clean lines and a clear indoor-outdoor connection.
