Kew Gardens to open brand new permanent garden around Carbon
Briefly

The Carbon Garden, set to open in July 2025, focuses on educating visitors about carbon and the climate crisis while promoting nature-based solutions. It features installations inspired by fungi, curated plant collections to reflect temperature changes, and elements like soil profiles and fossil findings to connect plants to fossil fuels. Drought-tolerant plants illustrate future adaptations to climate change, while water management strategies will also be showcased. Funded by Biffa Award, the garden aims to engage and inspire visitors to advocate for sustainability.
The Carbon Garden offers a unique opportunity to showcase our ongoing research, combining scientific insight with thoughtful design and beautiful planting to highlight the role of carbon in our lives, how it moves through the environment and how plants and fungi can help us tackle climate change. We hope the Carbon Garden inspires visitors to act and join us in shaping a more sustainable, resilient future for life on our planet.
The garden will feature a curated selection of herbaceous perennials, illustrating the dramatic rise in global average temperatures over time. This visual statement will welcome visitors into the garden, alongside a soil profile, a rocky outcrop, and an exposed coal seam showing fossilised plants, highlighting the connection between plants and fossil fuels.
