Around 80 firefighters and 12 fire engines tackled the blaze in St Marks Square just after 9.50am on August 15. The fire is believed to have been accidental, caused by an electrical event occurring in an extension lead that was being used on a balcony, resulting in significant damage to a tenth-floor flat.
Josh Cope, a resident, expressed his fear, stating, "I don't want to live here, I've had enough. It's just getting too scary. Part of me wonders if the building is safe. My whole family is asthmatic; I do not feel safe here."
Two police officers were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and later released from the hospital. They had entered the building to evacuate residents before firefighters arrived.
