Student housing proposed to sit above Thameslink tunnels near King's Cross
Briefly

A new student accommodation building has been proposed for a site above the Thameslink railway tunnels between King's Cross and Farringdon stations. If approved, it will consist of 121 beds and will exhibit a lightweight structure to minimize impact on the railway below. The design includes communal areas and a green courtyard, responding to community feedback. Challenges due to engineering logistics of building over and adjacent to active railways have been noted, as well as the intention to reclaim historical bricks from a ventilation shaft on the site.
The engineering challenge of building on the site presents a unique project, with deep foundations needed beside railway tunnels and a lightweight structure above.
A dedicated community space will be included at ground level, emphasizing local engagement, alongside student amenities that enhance the shared living experience.
