The Trump administration's recent actions are seen as significant reversals of civil rights progress, particularly in federal contractor regulations. Acting Labor Secretary Vincent Micone ordered the Department of Labor to stop enforcing anti-discrimination laws and affirmative action initiatives, effectively nullifying Executive Order 11246. This order had mandated that contractors provide equal employment opportunities and maintain affirmative action programs. The cessation of these mandates is expected to impact diversity and equity efforts significantly, as the DOL previously conducted audits to ensure compliance, which sometimes led to substantial settlements for violations.
"The Trump administration continues to reverse decades of civil rights and equity work," a legislative researcher said.
Micone's order directed the agency to cease all activities under Executive Order 11246, which President Trump revoked earlier this week.
The DOL office has previously stated that its audits were assigned on a random basis and conducted to verify whether government contractors and subcontractors were complying with equal employment opportunity regulations.
Trump has revoked several executive orders designed to promote diversity and uphold civil rights laws through his order on 'Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity.'
