Why a 98-year-old federal judge is asking the Supreme Court for her job back
""The idea that she's not capable of doing her judicial duties is nonsense," said her attorney John Vecchione, senior litigation counsel at the nonprofit New Civil Liberties Alliance."
""I mean there have been sexual harassers, there have been people who fudged their ... expenses, there's been all kinds of skullduggerous activity, alcoholic, all kinds of things and those people have not..." said Vecchione."
Judge Pauline Newman, at 98 years old, is requesting the Supreme Court to allow her to resume hearing cases after being sidelined for three years due to competency concerns. Appointed in 1984, Newman has been a prominent figure in patent law. Despite her age, former colleagues assert her capabilities remain intact, although her slower writing and frequent dissents have drawn criticism. An investigation into her fitness was initiated in March 2023, but Newman has contested the court's choice of evaluators, maintaining her competence has not been legally challenged.
