Abhishek MR, a 30-year-old man from Bangalore, filed a lawsuit against India's leading multiplex, PVR Inox, for making him watch 25 minutes of ads before his scheduled film. He argued that this disrupted his plans and wasted valuable time. The consumer court ruled in his favor, awarding him compensation of 50,000 INR for time lost and 5,000 INR for mental anguish. The ruling emphasized the importance of time for customers and critiqued cinemas for prioritizing advertising revenue over the viewer experience. The court found that many of the ads were commercial rather than public service announcements.
“The complainant could not attend other arrangements and appointments which were scheduled for the day and has faced losses that cannot be calculated in terms of money as compensation.”
“In the new era, time is considered as money, each one's time is very precious... twenty-five to 30 minutes is a considerable amount of time to sit idle in the theatre and watch unnecessary ads.”
