"Want to live longer but don't want to change what you're already doing to try and live a healthy life? We have good news. You likely don't need to spend an extra three hours in the gym every week. You also probably don't need to get eight hours of sleep every night. And you likely don't have to revamp your diet, either."
"In fact, adding just a few more minutes of sleep and exercise to your day, as well as some extra whole grains or vegetables, can increase your lifespan by a year, according to a study published in eClinicalMedicine. We always think that we need to make these massive overhauls, especially at the beginning of the year with New Year's resolutions, says lead study author Nicholas Koemel, a dietitian and research fellow at the University of Sydney."
Small, sustainable lifestyle tweaks can meaningfully extend lifespan and health span. Adding roughly five minutes of sleep, two minutes of moderate or vigorous activity, and extra whole grains or vegetables can increase lifespan by about a year. Nearly 60,000 participants in the UK Biobank were followed for about eight years using wrist-wearable sleep and activity data combined with self-reported diet surveys. Estimated outcomes included changes in lifespan and health span, defined as years free of five major conditions including cardiovascular disease and dementia. Minor, cumulative changes may be easier to sustain long term.
