Semaglutide melts fat-but may quietly strip away your strength
Briefly

Semaglutide users, particularly older adults and women, may experience significant muscle loss. A study conducted with 40 obese adults observed that those on semaglutide lost more weight, but a similar percentage of weight loss came from lean mass compared to a lifestyle program. Results indicated that older age, being female, or consuming less protein increased muscle loss in semaglutide users. In addition, greater muscle loss was associated with decreased improvements in blood sugar levels. Higher protein intake may counteract the muscle loss in these individuals.
Approximately 40% of the weight lost from taking semaglutide -- a type of weight-loss medication known as a GLP-1 -- comes from lean mass, including muscle.
In the semaglutide group, older age, female gender, or less protein intake was linked to greater muscle loss, which was also associated with less improvement in blood sugar levels.
