A recent study at Stanford examined glucose levels in 55 subjects consuming different carbohydrates such as grapes and rice. Led by experts in metabolism, it aims to enhance prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of metabolic diseases, particularly diabetes. In 2024, 38.4 million Americans had diabetes, with Type 2 diabetes being the most prevalent due to insulin resistance driven by lifestyle factors. Many are unaware they are prediabetic, particularly among adults over 18 and seniors over 65, where nearly half are affected.
The results could lead to better prevention, diagnoses and treatment of prediabetes, diabetes and other metabolic diseases that lower quality of life and raise health care costs.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 38.4 million people, or 11.6% of the U.S. population, had diabetes in 2024.
Most common is Type 2 diabetes, which occurs when the body develops resistance to insulin because of diet, lifestyle, weight and family history.
More than a third of the nearly 100 million people in the U.S. over 18 and nearly half of all people 65 or older are prediabetic – the vast majority unknowingly.
