The number of people hospitalized from the E. coli outbreak linked to raw onions on McDonald's Quarter Pounder hamburgers has more than doubled, with 75 reported cases across 13 states.
Federal health officials stated that the risk to consumers has diminished following the recall of onions in many affected states and that major fast-food chains have removed onions as a precaution.
The CDC noted that while cases were initially concentrated in the Mountain West, new data indicates illnesses have surfaced in states such as Michigan, Washington, and Oregon.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the raw, slivered onions predominantly served on McDonald's Quarter Pounders are the likely source of the E. coli contamination.
