Instagram Announces Major Change for U.S. Users
"We have seen a ton of demand from people on Instagram to watch Reels on TV,"
"We hear all the time that people get together with they're friends to watch Reels. It's fun to connect with your friends about this stuff."
"We're committed to keep pushing the boundaries of entertainment on customers' biggest screens - the Instagram team has built an awesome experience, and we're excited to be the first place to offer it."
Instagram rolled out a pilot app called Instagram for TV to display Reels on connected televisions. Reels are short-form, vertical videos introduced in 2020 that provide an endless stream of content similar to TikTok. The initial pilot is available only in the United States and limited to Amazon Fire TV devices, with plans to expand to additional devices and markets next year. The move responds to user demand for watching Reels on larger screens and for shared viewing experiences. TikTok has a comparable TV app. The pilot currently does not include ads but that could change.
