French pastry chef Cédric Grolet has gained massive popularity for his trompe-l'œil desserts, artful creations resembling various fruits that have collectively garnered over 115 million views online. His signature desserts, which include peach and banana shapes, have inspired chefs around the world, including Catherine Zhang in Los Angeles. At her shop, Tu Cha, unique fruit-shaped desserts like the My Man Go and Berry3 showcase innovative flavors and textures. The trend highlights a blend of culinary artistry and social media influence, as these visually deceptive treats delight dessert enthusiasts everywhere.
"These types of desserts have been around for a while, but Cedric would be the one who started the trend and brought these kinds of desserts into popularity," says Catherine Zhang, chef and partner at Tu Cha boba and dessert shop in Koreatown.
"When you crack into the chocolate, the mousse is smooth and almost jellylike with a center that tastes like you're biting into a ripe mango."
"It's pretty crazy how popular these desserts have become, and it’s fascinating to see more chefs exploring this kind of artistry in desserts."
