"I left the consulting firm to go work with him when he bought Cape Cod chips back. So it just kind of all timed out, But I'm glad I did [consulting], because it was really a wonderful experience to work for somebody that I wasn't related to, have a real boss, and have co-workers that I wasn't related to."
"In hindsight, it was a weird situation, because I was actually the head of marketing who reported to the president, who wasn't my dad, There really wasn't time for worrying about anything but getting this brand back. I had realized that this was my chance to create the company that I've been envisioning in my head since I was a little kid on my mom's natural food store counter,"
Nicole Bernard Dawes grew up working at her mother's health-food store and around her father's snack business, Cape Cod chips. She began her career as a management consultant for food and beverage clients but left to join her father when he repurchased Cape Cod chips in 1996. Dawes became director of marketing, reporting to a president who was not her father, and focused on restoring the brand after rapid divestment by Anheuser. She led product innovation including reduced-fat chips that became best-sellers. After her father sold Cape Cod a second time to Lance, Dawes left to found her own company, leveraging family and consulting experience.
